  • 1 Jar Organic Applesauce – Certified Organic – Bowman’s Mountain
  • 1 Bag Apples – Certified Organic – Oyler’s Organic Farms

Apples are coming out of my ears

I’m going to say it. I’m really tired of Apples.  And it’s only October. But there have been way too many Apples from my Fruit Share. I like Apples. I do. But not when they’re shoved down my throat week after week.

Week 21: What’s in the [Swap] Box?

Week 21. Needless to say, more stuff in the Swap Box: Collard Greens. Squash. Acorn Squash. Radishes.  And there was nothing in the Swap Box, so I couldn’t get anything in return for all of the stuff I put in there. Bummer. I’m the prime example of someone who should not be a member of a CSA. Money wasted. Lesson learned.

  • 1 Bunch Collard Greens – Certified Organic – Autumn Blend Organics
  • 1 Head Green Romaine Lettuce – Certified Organic – Bellview Organics
  • 2 Delicata Squash  – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics
  • 1 Bag Candy Onions – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics

  • 1 Bunch Baby Orange Carrots  – Certified Organic – Elm Tree Organics

When they said Baby Carrots, they meant it!

Red Onions

  • 1 Bag Gala Apples- IPM – Kauffman’s Fruit Farm
  • 1 Bag Golden Supreme Apples – Certified Organic – Oyler’s Organic Farm

Gala – great snacking Apples!

More Golden Supreme

Apples, Apples, Apples. I’m swimming in Apples. I still have a few left from last week. And I even made an Apple Pie. There will be a post on that another day though.

Week 4: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! So it’s Week 4 and we have a few new vegetables in the box, but mostly ones we’ve already had. Unfortunately we do have Kale and Radishes in this box, so that is a bummer.  I’m hoping that we stop getting those very soon since I don’t like it/use it. I hate wasting it, but I will not use it and I don’t know anyone around here that like those!

I used the Shiitake Mushrooms from last week’s box in a Chicken Marsala dish, and it was delicious!

THE BOX:

1 Head Green Romaine Lettuce – Certified Organic – Riverview Organics

1 Bunch Pink Beauty Radishes – Certified Organic – Friends Road Organics

1 Bunch Green Kale – Certified Organic – Eagle View Organics

1 Bag Broccoli – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bunch White Baby Hakurei Turnips – Certified Organic – Autumn Blend Organics

1 Bunch White Scallions – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bunch Garlic Scapes – Certified Organic – Outback Farm

1 Bunch Cilantro – Certified Organic – Noble Herbs

I’ve never had Turnips before, so I’m kind of nervous about those. They just don’t look or sound good, in my opinion. LOL! I think something that turns me away is that they look like radishes, but just a different color and a little bigger.  What do you do with them? I’ve never had Garlic Scapes either. I’m not sure I really even know what to do with them either, lol. I’ll have to do some research on them and look for some recipes that use them. Have you ever had them?

And add Cilantro to the list of things I don’t like. So this week’s box wasn’t looking so good to me. There was a head of Romaine Lettuce, but that wasn’t really all that much (compared to what we usually get) so we can probably only get a few small side salads out of it instead of larger dinner salads.  I love Broccoli (cooked) so that will get used.

And that about sums it up. So I’d give this week’s box a big two thumbs down.

Week 2: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! So it’s week 2, and we’re still early in the season so I got quite a few repeats from last week’s box. I will be honest – this week’s half share wasn’t great at all. Aside from the fact that I don’t like two of the items, two of the other items just didn’t look good.  I’ll talk about that more in a bit. Let’s take a look at what came in the box…

THE BOX:

1 Bunch Green Kale – Certified Organic – Life Enhancing Acres

1 Bag Broccoli – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bag Arugula – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bunch French Breakfast Radishes – Certified Organic – Meadow Brook Organics

1 Head Red Leaf Lettuce – Certified Organic – Railroad Organics

1 Bunch Red Scallions – Certified Organic – Sweetaire Farm

1 Bag Spinach – Certified Organic – Autumn Blend Organics

Ugh…it’s those stupid Radishes again!! And more Kale! (more about that in another post). I can definitely use the Spinach, Scallions and Broccoli. I’ve got plans for those things already. The Red Leaf Lettuce? It looked horrible. I’m not sure if you can really see it in the picture that I posted, but it just looked…old. It felt soggy, if that makes any sense. There just wasn’t any way to salvage it, so unfortunately I had to throw it out. The Arugula didn’t look good at all either. So that joined the party with the lettuce. It’s unfortunate, and I was pretty sad that I had to get rid of it, but it just didn’t look edible to me. So it wasn’t a very good CSA box week (for me, anyway).  Here’s hoping next week’s box is better…

What’s in the Box?

I just joined a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program and this is the first week that they are delivering.  The CSA that I joined is called Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative. They provide 25 weeks of local, Certified Organic produce from their cooperative network of over 75 Lancaster County family farms. I’m very excited about this as I know it will give me the opportunity to try some different vegetables that I’ve never had before. I also signed up for the Fruit Share as well, but that doesn’t start until June. So from now until then I’ll just be sharing the Vegetable version of “What’s in the Box?” each Wednesday. I’ll be asking everyone to share their favorite recipes for the vegetables that I get and this will hopefully give me some new ideas.

It’s pretty convenient because we only have to walk about 3 blocks or so to pick up our half-share. The time that we have to pick it up isn’t so great, but we can make it happen.

THE BOX:

1 Bag Spinach – Certified Organic – Autumn Blend Organics

1 Bunch Rhubarb – Certified Organic – Elm Tree Organics

1 Bunch Green Kale – Certified Organic – Life Enhancing Acres

1 Bunch White Scallions – Certified Organic – Friends Road Organics

1 Head Green Leaf Lettuce – Certified Organic – Green Valley Organics

1 Bunch Asparagus – Certified Organic – Meadow Valley Organics, Plum Hill Organics, Sweetaire Farm, or Rolling Ridge Farm

1 Bunch French Breakfast Radishes – Certified Organic – Plum Hill Organics

There are a few things in this first box that I’ve never had, and that is Kale and Rhubarb. I’ve heard that Kale is good sauteed with some garlic and EVOO. How do you like to prepare Kale? I’d love some more ideas! As for the Rhubarb, I’ve only heard of it paired with Strawberries. I will admit, I’m very nervous to try it. Super nervous. But I’m going to do it, and I’m going to try making a Strawberry and Rhubarb Pie. What else can you do with Rhubarb?

And the only thing in this box that I know I don’t like is Radishes. I remember that when I was growing up my Mom used to put radishes in our salad and I would pick those suckers right out. Yuck! So I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be looking to see if I can find a new home for those bad boys!
