Week 23: What’s in the Box?

Week 23. Only TWO more weeks to go! I’m so happy it’s almost over!

More stuff in the Swap Box: Romaine Lettuce, Spaghetti Squash, Cilantro and Radishes.  The only thing I was able to get out of the Swap Box was more Potatoes.

I used the Tatsoi from last week in a Shrimp Scampi dish that I make, and I loved the flavor it brought to the dish. I’ll probably use this week’s Tatsoi when I stuff a beef tenderloin – yum!

No major plans for anything else. I usually use Leeks in soup, so I’ll probably wash, cut up and freeze these leeks for when I need them for a recipe.

Week 16: What’s in the Box?

Welcome to What’s in the Box Wednesday! Last week’s box seems wonderful compared to this week’s box. At this point I’m kind of just ready for this to be over.  We put more in the Swap Box than we kept. We did get two extra Green Peppers and some Onions from the Swap Box.   I just don’t like a lot of the stuff they gave out. I don’t care for Red Butterhead Lettuce. We all know how I feel about Red Beets (LOL!). I’m not into Dandelion Greens, and I’m not down with Red Chard or Okra.

I’m so over tomatoes. Seriously. My counter at home is full of Tomatoes, and I’m getting more! I can get down with some Shallots, I do like those. I’m pretty sick of Straightneck Squash. I have quite a bit in my freezer. I don’t really need any Green Peppers, but I can freeze those for future use. And that about sums up the box. It’s quite sad, actually.

  • 2 Small Heads Red Butterhead Lettuce – Certified Organic – Riverview Organics *SWAP BOX
  • 1 Bag Shallots – Certified Organic – Shady Brook Organics

  • 1 Half Pint Red Raspberries – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

Peaches

Red Raspberries

The original email I got about the Fruit Share said we’d be getting Apples, and I wasn’t really ready for those. They scream Fall to me. You know the cool, crisp air. And well, it’s still Summer. Although we have had a few gorgeous days here. But anyways,  the morning of the pick-up the email listed us as getting Peaches instead of Apples. That made me so very happy! The Nectarines from last week were delicious. I did have to throw one of them away because it was absolutely gross, but the others were wonderful.  I love Red Raspberries, so I’m pretty stoked about those. Although a half pint is pretty small!

How did you use your CSA box this week?

Week 15: What’s in the Box?

Welcome to the latest edition of What’s in the Box Wednesday! Last week was just kind of “eh” in the vegetable world. Nothing too exciting. We really enjoyed the Sweet Corn on the Cob – it was sweet and delicious!  I ended up cutting the Baby Sweet Peppers into strips and throwing them in the freezer. They’ll come in handy one day when we have stir fry or something like that.

This week’s box isn’t impressive at all, in my opinion. Nothing really wowed me.  I don’t like Red Chard, so that went into the Swap Box. I didn’t want the Yellow Seedless Watermelon because honestly I didn’t care for it that much. So that went into the Swap Box.  I did use some Yellow Watermelon in a Cocktail; stay tuned to 5 Ingredient Friday this week to see what it was! But anyway…If I was on a deserted island and the only thing to eat was Yellow Watermelon I would eat it, but otherwise I’ll have to pass. The Sangria Watermelon from last week was one of the best Watermelons I’ve ever eaten. It was so good. So I was sad that we weren’t getting another one of those.

I’m going to have to find some new recipes to use the tomatoes in. I still have the Sungold Tomatoes from last week. I haven’t gotten around to eating those yet. We have more Cherry Tomatoes this week, along with Roma Tomatoes. I just may have to have Tomato, Basil & Mozzarella again since we’re also getting Sweet Thai Basil!

I have some Zucchini that I sliced up and put in the freezer, so I’ll probably pull that out and saute some Squash, Zucchini, Onions, and Mushrooms with a little bit of garlic and use that as a side dish. As you can see though, not all of the vegetables are perfect that we get. I had to throw that one yellow onion out because it was all gross. It happens. No biggie.

  • 1 Bag Yellow Onions – Certified Organic – Friends Road Organics
  • 1 Bunch Red Chard – Certified Organic – Maple Lawn Organics *Put in Swap Box
  • 2 Red Bell Peppers – Certified Organic – Meadow Valley Organics
  • 1 Bag Roma Tomatoes – Certified Organic – Millwood Springs Organics
  • 1 Yellow Straightneck Squash – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics
  • 2 Heads of Baby Romaine Lettuce – Riverview Organics
  • 1 Pint Cherry Tomatoes – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres
  • 1 Bunch Sweet Thai Basil – Certified Organic – Noble Herbs

Baby Romaine & Plum Tomatoes

Red Bell Peppers

White Onions

  • 1 Yellow Seedless Watermelon – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres *Put in Swap Box
  • 1 Bag Nectarines – IPM – Kissel Hill Fruit Farm

Nectarines

The original email I got about the Fruit Share said we’d be getting Peaches, so I was super excited about that! But the day of the pick-up the email said we were getting Nectarines. *sigh* I like Nectarines, but Peaches are sooooo much better. The Peaches have been so sweet and delicious lately. They are a wonderful snack. But I guess I’ll have to get on board with the Nectarines.

How did you use your CSA box this week?

Week 12: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! I really didn’t have any major complaints about last week’s box.  It included more Beets but they went into the Swap Box.  The Carrots were used in the crock pot with some onions and a nice hunk of meat for a Pot Roast.  Served as a side dish for the Pot Roast were the Dragon Tongue Beans. They were very good! It’s the first time I’ve had them.

We have some new Fruits and Veggies on the block this week! Everything will get used in some way, shape or form. I’m happy to see Corn on the Cob on the list, but I just hope that there aren’t any unwelcome guests! So all in all I’m pretty happy with the goods this week.

THE BOX:

1 Bag Cured White Onions – Certified Organic – Crystal Springs Organics

1 Bag Green Beans – Certified Organic – Healthy Harvest Organics

1 Quart Mixed Tomatoes – Certified Organic – Green Valley Organics

1 Bag Mint – Certified Organic – Noble Herbs *Put in the Swap Box

1 Bag Garlic – Certified Organic – Eagle View Acres

1 Pint Cherry Tomatoes – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

1 Bag Baby Eggplants – Certified Organic – Hillside Organics *Put in the Swap Box

4 Ears Bi-Color Sweet Corn – Certified Organic – Coyote Run Organics

I still have two pints of Cherry Tomatoes from last week (that still look good) plus I have the Cherry Tomatoes from this week + extra Cherry Tomatoes Mr. Curly Fry swapped for the Eggplants and the Mint. So that’s 4 pints of Cherry Tomatoes plus the 4 Tomatoes from this week. So I’m swimming in tomatoes! I think I’m going to make a nice Marinara Sauce with all of the tomatoes.  The Onions and Garlic will come in handy in that as well.

FRUIT SHARE

1 Cantaloupe – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

1 Pint Blackberries – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

1 Bag Peaches – IPM – Kauffman’s Fruit Farm

I’m not a fan of Cantaloupe, but Mr. Curly Fry is, so I’ll cut that up for him to snack on. The Peaches from last week’s box were used as a side dish for dinner and as a snack! I think I may freeze this week’s Peaches (washed & cut up) to use in Smoothies since I’m going away this weekend.  Blackberries will be eaten for breakfast!

Did you utilize the Swap Box this week? What did you exchange?

Week 11: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! Last week’s box was a step up from the week before.  There were a few repeats, but nothing that I had a huge problem with.  There are some new additions to the box, which I always welcome! The new stuff in the box this week includes Dragon Tongue Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Purple Onions, Orange Carrots, and Lemon Cucumbers.

I’m happy there’s no Corn on the Cob in the box this week because I’m still traumatized by last week’s hitchhikers! I don’t have any grand plans for this week’s vegetables. I have some lettuce so it sounds like a nice big salad is in order – lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, lemon cucumbers and some Gorgonzola cheese!

THE BOX:

1 Bag Dragon Tongue Beans – Certified Organic – Bellview Organics

1 Pint Cherry Tomatoes – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

1 Bunch Fresh Purple Onions - Certified Organic – Taste of Nature

1 Bunch Orange Carrots – Certified Organic – Windy Hollow Organics

2 Green Zucchini – Certified Organic – Maple Lawn Organics

1 Bunch Bulls Blood Beets – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics - Traded these for Tomatoes!

3 Lemon Cucumbers – Certified Organic – Elm Tree Organics

1 Bag New Red Potatoes (Unwashed) – Certified Organic – Green Valley Organics

1 Green Pepper - From Swap Box

FRUIT SHARE

1 Half Pint Blackberries – Certified Organic – White Swan Acres

1 Bag Peaches – Organically Grown or IPM – Kissel Hill Fruit Farm or Kauffman’s Fruit Farm

The Blackberries from the fruit share will go great with the Raspberries and Strawberries I already have. I love to take Mixed Berries for breakfast. And I am a huge pan of Peaches. I’ll either eat them as a snack, or grill them on my Griddler with some maple syrup & brown sugar. They are so good over some Vanilla Bean ice cream!
