Week 23: What’s in the Box?

Week 23. Only TWO more weeks to go! I’m so happy it’s almost over!

More stuff in the Swap Box: Romaine Lettuce, Spaghetti Squash, Cilantro and Radishes.  The only thing I was able to get out of the Swap Box was more Potatoes.

I used the Tatsoi from last week in a Shrimp Scampi dish that I make, and I loved the flavor it brought to the dish. I’ll probably use this week’s Tatsoi when I stuff a beef tenderloin – yum!

No major plans for anything else. I usually use Leeks in soup, so I’ll probably wash, cut up and freeze these leeks for when I need them for a recipe.

Week 9: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! It was another one of those ‘blah’ weeks for the CSA box. It seems to be a trend now. I was not thrilled about any of it. A lot of the same old stuff, and I’m kind of over it.  Mr. Curly Fry picks it up for me each week since they picked the worst time ever for a pick-up time for my location (11am – 2pm – I guess they don’t think people work during the day?). At any rate, I had him leave a bunch of items in the Swap box this week that I did want. He said that everyone else had the same idea because the swap box was full of the same crap.

There are a few items I will use like the Onions, Broccoli, maybe the Garlic, and the Squash.  As for the Pickling Cucumbers…really? 3 TINY little cucumbers. What am I supposed to do with those?  Seriously…what was the point of them giving me 3 tiny ones? What a joke.  If I knew there were so few of them, I would’ve put them in the swap box too.

THE BOX: (* means it’s not pictured because it’s in the Swap Box)

1 Bunch Fresh Yellow Onions – Certified Organic – Crystal Springs Farm

1 Head Green Cabbage* – Certified Organic

1 Head Broccoli – Certified Organic

1 Bunch Green Kale*- Certified Organic – Life Enhancing Acres

1 Bunch Fresh Red German Garlic - Certified Organic – Liberty Branch Farm

1 Bunch Gold Beets* – Certified Organic – Organic Willow Acres

2 Yellow Patty Pan Squash – Certified Organic – Plum Hill Organics

1 Bag Pickling Cucumbers – Certified Organic – Taste of Nature

Kale…again. Really? I’m so over it. There may have been one or two weeks where we didn’t get Kale. And do you remember how I was jumping for joy those weeks? But it’s in this week’s box…again. So now it’s in the swap box with everyone else’s.

And we have more Beets. Yuck. I don’t care if they are red or gold, I don’t want them. So they are in the swap box as well, along with the Cabbage.

FRUIT SHARE

1 Pint Blueberries – Certified Organic – Little Buck Organics (Sourced from Hammonton, NJ)

1 Jar Red Raspberry Jam - Certified Organic – Oak View Organics

1 Bunch Rhubarb* – Transitional – Country View Produce

I’m getting tired of Blueberries because I think we’ve gotten them every single week so far. And week after week they go in my freezer for Smoothies. I’m not complaining about them yet, but if I keep getting them week after week I will get sick of them.

I can get down with the Raspberry Jam because I LOVE raspberry jam.  Although I still have that Strawberry Jam in my fridge that I haven’t opened yet.

Rhubarb…really? I was getting Rhubarb with my Vegetable Share before, and now I’m getting it with my Fruit Share. I feel like I’m getting ripped off. I still have the rhubarb in my freezer from the bunch of times I got it before. So this rhubarb went straight into the swap box (with everyone else’s).

HUGE thumbs down for this week’s box. I thought it was supposed to get better?!

Week 8: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! Now I know a lot of people aren’t really interested in getting Lettuce in their box, but I am! So I’m happy to see the Romaine Lettuce in the box this week! I plan on doing a nice salad with Romaine Lettuce, Radicchio, White Baby Cucumbers, Grilled Chicken, Dried Cherries and Gorgonzola! This is the perfect lunch to take to work.

I love to steam Broccoli for a nice side dish, but the broccoli I got wasn’t even enough for one person! So I cleaned it and popped it in the freezer to use at a later date with some broccoli that I already have in there.

This week there’s a new kid in town – Cauliflower! Now, I’m not normally a fan of cauliflower, but when I went to watch Sunny Anderson tape a few episodes of Cooking for Real, she made this dish called Cauliflower in Curry Cream Sauce. That dish smelled SO GOOD when she was cooking it that I need to try it. I said that when Cauliflower came in my CSA box I was going to try making her recipe. I have everything else that I need for the recipe, and now I have the Cauliflower!  I can’t wait to see how it tastes!

I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing with the Rainbow Chard – I’ve never had it before. How do you prepare it?

THE BOX:

1 Bunch Fresh Sweet Onions – Certified Organic – Eagle View Organics

1 Bunch Rainbow Chard – Certified Organic – Friends Road Organics

1 Head Broccoli – Certified Organic – Organic Willow Acres

1 Head Romaine Lettuce – Certified Organic – Bellview Organics

1 Head Radicchio – Certified Organic – Bellview Organics

1 Bag White Cucumbers – Certified Organic – Liberty Branch Farm

1 Bunch Curly Parsley – Certified Organic – Noble Herbs

1 Head White Cauliflower – Certified Organic – Plum Hill Organics

2 Green Zucchini - Certified Organic – Rolling Ridge Farm

FRUIT SHARE:

1 lb. Sour Cherries – IPM – Cherry Hill Orchards

1 Half Pint Blueberries – Certified Organic – Little Buck Organics (Sourced from Hammonton, NJ)

1 Half Pint Black Raspberries – Certified Organic – Maple Valley Organics

So…Sour Cherries. I’m excited! I love fresh cherries. I’m going to make a Cherry Pie this weekend with the cherries that I got, but I think I need to buy some more because I don’t think the amount I got will be enough.  My mouth is watering for it as I type! I’ll use the Blueberries in Smoothies.  I was so excited to see the Black Raspberries. My Grandmother had black raspberry bushes in her yard and I always picked them as a kid. They are delicious! I’ll probably eat those with Strawberries and Raspberries for breakfast.

Week 5: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! So it’s Week 5 and we have a few new items in the box this week! The two things I’ve never had that came in this week’s box are Green Chard and Endive.  I’m not really sure what I’ll do with them yet. I’ll have to look up some recipes that use those ingredients and see what I want to do. I tasted the Endive by itself and wasn’t a fan. Maybe it tastes better cooked…?

I must be honest – I’m totally missing all of the different lettuces and spinach that I got earlier in the season. But I knew that stuff wouldn’t last forever. I did get a head of butter leaf lettuce so I can at least throw together some salad for lunch a few days this week. Or maybe if I have time I can run to Reading Terminal Market and pick up some Spring Mix to go with it so we can have a huge dinner salad. It’s going to be so hot this week that I won’t want to cook anything.

THE BOX:

1 Bunch Green Chard – Certified Organic – Millwood Springs Organics

1 Pint Strawberries – Certified Organic – Healthy Harvest Organics

1 Head Green Endive – Certified Organic – Meadow Valley Organics

1 Head Broccoli – Certified Organic – Soaring Eagle Acres

1 Head Butterhead Lettuce – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics

1 Bunch Sweet Onions – Certified Organic – Liberty Branch Farm

1 Bunch Garlic Scapes – Certified Organic – Sunny Crest Organics

We used the Strawberries in a smoothie yesterday, and they were absolutely delicious.  So much better than the gigantic strawberries on steroids you buy at the grocery store!

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the Sweet Onions yet.  I’m guessing that I can use both the bottom part and the greens. I thought about caramelizing them in the crock pot (the bottom of the onion) with some vidalia onions for a French Onion Soup, but it’s been pretty hot here so I’m not sure soup would be a good idea!  I could use them to test out a new recipe of that Sweet Onion Casserole that I tried making that needed some help, but I’m not sure.

If you belong to a CSA, what are you making with your vegetables?

Week 4: What’s in the Box?

You know what today is! What’s in the Box Wednesday! So it’s Week 4 and we have a few new vegetables in the box, but mostly ones we’ve already had. Unfortunately we do have Kale and Radishes in this box, so that is a bummer.  I’m hoping that we stop getting those very soon since I don’t like it/use it. I hate wasting it, but I will not use it and I don’t know anyone around here that like those!

I used the Shiitake Mushrooms from last week’s box in a Chicken Marsala dish, and it was delicious!

THE BOX:

1 Head Green Romaine Lettuce – Certified Organic – Riverview Organics

1 Bunch Pink Beauty Radishes – Certified Organic – Friends Road Organics

1 Bunch Green Kale – Certified Organic – Eagle View Organics

1 Bag Broccoli – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bunch White Baby Hakurei Turnips – Certified Organic – Autumn Blend Organics

1 Bunch White Scallions – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics

1 Bunch Garlic Scapes – Certified Organic – Outback Farm

1 Bunch Cilantro – Certified Organic – Noble Herbs

I’ve never had Turnips before, so I’m kind of nervous about those. They just don’t look or sound good, in my opinion. LOL! I think something that turns me away is that they look like radishes, but just a different color and a little bigger.  What do you do with them? I’ve never had Garlic Scapes either. I’m not sure I really even know what to do with them either, lol. I’ll have to do some research on them and look for some recipes that use them. Have you ever had them?

And add Cilantro to the list of things I don’t like. So this week’s box wasn’t looking so good to me. There was a head of Romaine Lettuce, but that wasn’t really all that much (compared to what we usually get) so we can probably only get a few small side salads out of it instead of larger dinner salads.  I love Broccoli (cooked) so that will get used.

And that about sums it up. So I’d give this week’s box a big two thumbs down.
