5 Ingredient Friday: Blueberry Cherrie Smoothie

This week’s 5 Ingredient Friday recipe is inspired by my freezer. Right now it’s jam packed full of fruits and vegetables that I’ve washed up and put into freezer bags. Cherries were on sale a few weeks ago so I bought about 3 lbs of them and I pitted them, washed them, and bagged them up. I also have 2 quart sized freezer bags full of fresh blueberries that came in my CSA box. I love to use fresh fruit in Smoothies. I know that there aren’t any extra sugars in them and it’s usually much cheaper than buying frozen fruit from the grocery store. Another reason I love to use fresh fruit that has been frozen is because it makes the smoothie a lot colder and I don’t need to water it down with ice.

This recipe for a Smoothie can be adapted to whatever fruit you have on hand. I happened to have extra Cherries and Blueberries in my freezer so I used those.  I also use Peaches, Raspberries, Strawberries, Blackberries, and even Pineapple when I make Smoothies. It just all depends on what I have in my freezer and what I’ in the mood for.  This recipe that I make serves at least 2 people, if not 3. So you can probably cut this in half if you’re making it for yourself.

  • 2 bananas, chopped up (I prefer them to be frozen)
  • 1 1/4 cup of orange juice (you can use another flavor here)
  • 2 scoops of sherbet (pick your flavor; I use orange flavored)
  • 2 cup of cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen)

Put 1 cup of orange juice in a blender (My recommendation: Vitamix). Add in your two bananas and blend until the bananas are blended thoroughly with the orange juice. Add in your cherries and blueberries. Blend until the fruit is blended in, adding about 1/4 cup of orange juice.  Add in 2 scoops of sherbet and blend until it’s all incorporated.  Serve.

Everything in the Vitamix

All blended together

Add 2 scoops of Sherbet

The finished product!

What’s your favorite Smoothie flavor?

Hi Ho! Cherry-O

Our favorite afternoon snack on Saturdays and Sundays is a Smoothie. They are so fun to make with my Vitamix! And truth be told, if I don’t use that blender for everything, Mr. Curly Fry will have a bird, lol! He almost had a heart attack spending that much money on one small appliance.  But anyway – back to what I was saying. We’re lucky to have Reading Terminal Market a few blocks away from us so that is where we get all of our fresh fruits and vegetables from. When we were there last week, I noticed that they had large bags of Red Bing Cherries for only $2.99 a bag so I grabbed a bag. I am always looking for some new flavors to add to our smoothies, and I thought cherries would be a fabulous addition.

Now we all know that cherries have those pesky pits in them that need to be removed. So how did I spend a few hours on Saturday and Sunday? Pitting those cherries by hand! I couldn’t imagine pitting enough cherries by hand to make a cherry pie. I had enough after finishing one bag of cherries. After pitting so many cherries, I decided I needed some help. I didn’t want to have to do this again. So I went on my favorite web site- Amazon.com – and searched for a good Cherry Pitter. You can never have too many kitchen gadgets! And I found one that got pretty good reviews. I ordered it and it’s in my possession at this very moment. I ended up buying the Oxo Good Grips Cherry Pitter.

I cannot wait to use this! The cherry pitter has a removable splatter shield that directs juices downward and prevents the juice from squirting everywhere. My kitchen work area won’t look like a crime scene anymore. When I go to the market this weekend, I’ll be getting several bags of cherries. I want to make some type of dessert with the cherries, but I can’t decide what to make.

So tell me – what’s your favorite dessert that involves cherries?

Simplehuman dish rack

There always seems to be that one gadget that you LOVE, but it’s priced a lot higher than you should be spending on something like that. That item for me is a dish rack. We currently have a dish rack that I HATE with a passion. It’s constantly sliding off of the tray it comes with, and I’m always cursing at it for one reason or another.

I saw this and instantly fell in love…

The only hang up is that it’s $69.99. For a dish rack. But I NEED it. I HAVE to have it. It would look so nice on my counter. And if I’m using up my precious counter space, I want to like what’s on it. So I think I’m going to bite the bullet one of these days and buy it.  Now if it only washed and dried the dishes for me, it would be absolutely perfect!
