Cake & the Bean Stalk

So as you all know, I love to get deals from Groupon, Living Social, Eversave, etc so that I can try out some new places around the city. It’s hard to believe we’ve already been living in the city for 10 months now, and there’s so many places we haven’t been yet. A while ago I bought a Groupon for Cake & the Bean Stalk, which is located at 1112 Locust Street in Philadelphia.

It was a beautiful morning for a walk, so I set out to use my Groupon and check out the place. I had $10 to spend and I was able to get breakfast [Everything Bagel w/ Cream Cheese $2.00], Coffee [price depends on size and what you order], and two desserts to go.  I think that everything was priced very well.

They have a very nice set up. When you go in the door there are some dessert/food cases set up near the register, and the sitting area is separated by a wall, which is nice. There is a little outside patio with chairs if you choose to sit out there, and there are a number of tables inside to choose from. It’s got a really cool vibe. The mismatched chairs at the tables give it a nice look.

They have many different beverages to choose from, as well as a number of freshly baked desserts like cookies, brownies, cakes, and a number of other sweets.  They also have Paninis! I was there a little too early for one though. They often have special deals, so be sure to follow them on Twitter.  I chose the Brownie [$2.50 - and it's quite large; you can choose with nuts or without] and the Blondie [$2.50 - and like the brownie it's quite large] as my to-go desserts.

The Brownie was delicious – nice and fudgy – exactly how I like them!

The Blondie was amazing; It was packed full of Reese’s Pieces!

Who wouldn’t want to stop in?

Cake and the Bean Stalk has Free WiFi, so feel free to take your laptop or other mobile device and stop in for a beverage, sandwich and dessert! Definitely pick up a Blondie and a Brownie – they’re amazing!  I’ll definitely stop back in for more desserts, and I want to try some of their iced beverages. It’s hot out there!

An Apology and WWYMW?

First I want to take a moment to apologize for my blog being a hot mess yesterday. The designer that made my background and header images was hosting them on Photobucket, and they are having “issues” to say the least. So I had to wait until last night until she could transfer them over for me. I’m in the process of getting them moved over to my server so we shouldn’t have this issue again.

Okay, now that I have that out of the way – I have a “WWYMW?” – What Would You Make With… question. I got a box of fresh organic produce yesterday from Suburban Organics. LivingSocial offered this deal for $19 and I jumped on it. I didn’t think $19 was bad for a box of fresh organic produce that was delivered right to me! I don’t think I’d pay the normal price ($39), but this was great for a one-time thing.  It was filled with organic fruits and vegetables such as valencia oranges, lemons, fuji apples, braeburn apples, strawberries, yams, russet potatoes, a red onion, button mushrooms, and arugula.  I have plans for everything except the Arugula.

So tell me – what would you make with this big bunch of Arugula?

Keratin treatment

I know this blog is 99% about food, but I have to go off topic for just one post. Over the weekend I finally bit the bullet and got a Keratin treatment done on my hair. I have naturally curly hair but I’ve been straightening it. Because you know how it goes – everyone that has curly hair wants straight hair, and everyone with straight hair wants curly hair! It would usually take at minimum a half hour to blow dry my hair every morning. And that always involved three different brushes — your flat brush, your small barrel brush, and your large barrel brush.

A little while ago I saw a LivingSocial deal for highlights and a Keratin treatment for $199 at a Salon & Spa that I tried out once for a massage & facial. This was just the little push that I needed to give it a try. So I bought the deal and knew from that point on I was locked in. Fast forward to my appointment on Saturday. I had to schedule an early appointment since that day was my niece’s 4th birthday and we were celebrating it with dinner and of course cake!

I arrived at my appointment and the first thing up was my highlights. I wasn’t planning on getting any highlights, but it came with it so why not? We actually decided to do a more natural color for my highlights so that it blended my hair a little better (I am growing out highlights from a year ago) and I LOVE how it turned out.  So the next part was the Keratin treatment.

Since I got the highlights first, they had to blow dry my hair and make sure it was 110% dry before starting the Keratin treatment. Once my hair was completely dry, she started the treatment. In sections she sprayed the treatment on my hair and combed it in. Once my whole head was completely done, I sat there for about 10 minutes. The next step was to blow dry my hair. Again, it had to be completely dry. The final step was to flat iron all of my hair in small sections.

So needless to say this is quite a process, and it definitely takes time. I was there from about 9am – 2:15pm. So it’s not a quick thing to have done. But I will tell you this – it’s DEFINITELY worth the time and the money. Instead of the 3 brushes and 30 minutes to blow dry my hair, this morning it took me less than 5 minutes and I didn’t even have to use a brush while blow drying it. I was shocked – I knew that the whole process would be easy, but I didn’t think it would be that easy!

So it’s safe to say that I’m thrilled with how it came out and I don’t know that I’ll be able to live without it now! It lasts about 40-50 washes. So it could be anywhere from 3 – 4 months.  I know that I will definitely get this done again. So a shout out to Rosa at Bernard’s Salon & Spa in Cherry Hill, NJ. She did a wonderful job and I would totally recommend that you go to her if you live in the area.
