Week 3 – Cake Decorating

I know I’m a bit behind – but November 11th was the third class of my 6 week Intermediate Pastry Arts course. We decorated a cake. So I was head to toe in icing all evening – that’s my idea of a good night!

However, we did not make the cake and the icing ourselves.  In the Intermediate course they concentrate on decorating the cake that you learned to make in the Beginner’s course. So they had all of the cakes and icing already made ahead of time for us.

You can truly tell I’m an icing kind of girl! I thought my cake turned out well, despite it being a bit uneven in the middle there. But did you see how I put a healthy dose of icing on this cake? LOL! We were so excited to try it.  So we sliced up a nice piece…

And then tasted it. Ugh. The cake itself wasn’t that bad. But we didn’t like the icing. At all. It was said to be a buttercream icing…but it tasted way too heavy on the butter/shortening and there wasn’t enough sugar in it. At any rate…I did not care for it, and didn’t eat my piece. So here we were with a huge cake that LOOKED good and smelled good…but it didn’t taste good.

That’s heart-breaking.
